Na Serra da Estrela há uma raça muito especial de cães.
Animais que são o exemplo perfeito desse dito que afirma que o “cão é o melhor amigo do homem”.
O Cão Serra da Estrela é mais que um amigo, é um compincha fiel, um companheiro que ajuda a que os longos dias dos pastores na Serra sejam mais fáceis de suportar. Um amigo que ajuda no trabalho e que com afinco e dedicação ajuda os pastores a controlarem os rebanhos. São animais resistentes de personalidade e meiguice forte. Crê-se que esta raça descenda dos antigos mastins do Tibete, tendo com o decorrer do tempo, adequando-se às necessidades de guardador de rebanhos nesta região montanhosa.
No próximo sábado decorre, no Cartaxo, o 1º Encontro Global do Cão da Serra da Estrela, num evento que pretende juntar criadores, comunidade científica e público em geral, num dia dedicado a esta que é uma das raças caninas mais antigas da europa. Este encontro contará com várias atividades como oficinas, uma mostra canina, palestras, tertúlias, concurso de fotografia, entre outras atividades.
Há já um portal dedicado ao Cão Serra da Estrela, em www.caoserradaestrela.net, onde se pode encontrar diversa informação acerca desta raça de instinto protetor e fidelidade ao seu dono.
O cão Serra da Estrela é um animal tranquilo, pouco excitável, embora mais enérgico e agitado quando é jovem. É um excelente cão de guarda, muito vigilante e sempre alerta.
Nos seus genes está a necessidade de liberdade, imposta pelos anos a guardar gado na vasta serrania, por isso pode ser um cão teimoso e muito independente, possuindo uma inteligência notável e, por isso, é fácil ensiná-lo.
Quem tem um cão Serra da Estrela fala da sua meiguice, reconhecendo que é um animal dócil, afetuoso e brincalhão, sendo paciente e cuidadoso com crianças, idosos e pessoas frágeis ou com deficiência.
Desde 2010 que existe a Confraria do Cão Serra da Estrela cujos objetivos passam pela valorização histórica, patrimonial, cultural, social, lúdica e de trabalho desta raça, a par da promoção e divulgação do cão Serra da Estrela.
É importante preservar aquilo que é nosso, e o cão Serra da Estrela é uma raça especial, por isso deve ser preservada.
É um ícone da região.
Quando pensamos nas imagens bucólicas da Serra é inevitável não adicionar ao quadro as ovelhas, o Pastor e o seu fiel ajudante. Não é estranho passearmos pelas aldeias desta Serra e vermos estes amigos de quatro patas pelas ruas, com ou sem ovelhas, alguns a gozarem os seus anos de “reforma”, deitados a desfrutarem dos raios de sol no inverno.
Os habitantes das aldeias reconhecem os seus cães e tratam-nos como habitantes da terra. É esse o carinho e o respeito que as gentes daqui têm por estes animais. São mais que cães são, verdadeiramente, amigos!
